Alaska’s grizzly bear is the same species as the Alaska brown bear known as Ursus Acrtos. While they are the same species, they certainly look much different. They look different because of where they live which dictates the bear’s diet, size and color.
A true Alaska “grizzly” bear is typically smaller and lighter in color and lives in interior Alaska at least 100 miles from the ocean and typically feeds off of berries, roots and whatever mammals they can find such as squirrels, moose and caribou. An Alaskan “brown” bear lives along the coast of Alaska where they have access to not only berries, grasses and some mammals but they also feed heavily on salmon which makes them a much larger animal.
The images in this photo gallery of the Alaska brown and grizzly bears are my favorite photos made of the animal in its natural habitat.
