I think Alaska has a very unique opportunity to photograph both night sky and especially the aurora borealis (a.k.a. northern lights) because of the varied types of landscapes Alaska offers including mountains, river, lakes, streams, forest and meadows. Because we can see the aurora only when it is dark, we also have an opportunity to photograph the Aurora in the fall when the water is “soft” (a liquid) and also once it becomes a hard mineral (ice). Photographing the Alaskan stars and moon and the northern lights in these natural settings is simply breathtaking.
